Pilanesberg sits inside a 1.3-billion-year-old ring of volcanic hills; neighbouring Madikwe shelters endangered wild dogs; and the whole is stitched together with the resort glamour of Sun City and the ridgelines of the Magaliesberg.

Biodiversity & landscape
North West is chiefly a Savanna province — the Central Bushveld — grading into grassland in the south-east and Kalahari thornveld toward the arid Botswana border. Its ecological showpiece is Pilanesberg, cradled in one of the world's best-preserved alkaline ring-dyke complexes, whose concentric hills — the roots of a volcano active some 1.3 billion years ago — form a near-perfect circle. The province shares two UNESCO designations: the Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve (2015, with Gauteng) and part of the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site (2005, with the Free State).
Fauna
This is South Africa's premier malaria-free Big Five country. Pilanesberg National Park — around 55,000 hectares in the volcanic basin — carries lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and both black and white rhino, restocked in the landmark 1979 reintroduction known as Operation Genesis. On the Botswana border, the roughly 75,000-hectare Madikwe Game Reserve is another Big Five destination and an important stronghold for the endangered African wild dog. Both lie outside the country's malaria zone, which makes them favourites for family safaris.
Flora
The vegetation is mixed bushveld and thornveld — acacia, marula and rocky-ridge woodland — shading into true Kalahari thornveld in the west, where the camel thorn and shepherd's tree stand over pale grasses. Highveld grassland edges in from the south-east, and the quartzite ridges of the Magaliesberg add their own bushveld and pockets of Afromontane forest.
Where to go
- Pilanesberg National Park — malaria-free Big Five in an ancient volcanic crater, threaded with game-viewing roads.
- Sun City — the flagship resort with its Valley of the Waves and championship golf, right beside Pilanesberg.
- Madikwe Game Reserve — exclusive, lodge-based Big Five and wild-dog safaris on the Botswana border.
- The Magaliesberg and Hartbeespoort Dam — hiking, a cableway and easy weekend leisure near the cities.
Weather & when to visit
North West has a warm, summer-rainfall bushveld climate: hot summers, roughly 22–34°C, broken by brief refreshing afternoon thundershowers between November and March, and dry, mild, sunny winters averaging around 16°C but with cold nights. The dry winter — about May to September — is the best time for a safari: the bush thins, water becomes scarce, and game gathers where it can be seen. Summer is greener and better for birding, but hotter and wetter.
