Bloubergstrand Kite Beach

Western Cape

Best time to visit

Nov–Mar, when the summer south-easter (Cape Doctor) blows strongest

Bloubergstrand, on the northern shore of Table Bay, offers one of the Cape's most photographed panoramas: Table Mountain rising directly across the water. Its exposed beachfront — the stretch locals call "Kite Beach" near Table View — is angled to catch the prevailing summer south-easterly, the fierce wind Capetonians nickname the "Cape Doctor," which typically blows from around October to March at 15–25 knots. That combination of dependable strong wind and westerly swell for launch ramps has earned Blouberg a global reputation among kitesurfers.

The area is best known internationally as the home of the Red Bull King of the Air, a big-air kitesurfing competition in which riders are judged on huge, technical jumps. After being relaunched in 2013 at Big Bay, the event moved to Blouberg (Kite Beach) and is run within a waiting window during the windy summer months, with organisers selecting the days when wind and swell are at their best. Note that conditions here suit experienced kiters rather than casual swimmers — the same wind that makes it world-class also makes it a demanding, equipment-heavy beach.
