Union Buildings

Sir Herbert Baker designed the Union Buildings to crown Meintjeskop, the highest hill above Pretoria, and the sandstone complex — completed in 1913 after nearly three years of work by roughly 1,265 artisans and labourers — was for a time the largest building in the country. Two symmetrical wings, linked by a semicircular colonnade and amphitheatre, were conceived to represent the union of South Africa's Afrikaner and English populations. Stretching more than 270 metres along the ridge, it remains the official seat of the national government and houses the offices of the President.

The terraces below have witnessed defining national moments, from the 1956 Women's March to Nelson Mandela's inauguration as South Africa's first democratically elected president in 1994. A 9-metre bronze statue of Mandela, arms outstretched, was unveiled in the gardens on 16 December 2013 and is often described as one of the largest statues of him in the world. The grounds also hold the roughly 9,000-seat Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre, set into a former quarry, alongside war memorials and terraced lawns open to the public.

In July 2024 the Union Buildings were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of fourteen components of "Human Rights, Liberation and Reconciliation: Nelson Mandela Legacy Sites," a serial property recognising landmarks of South Africa's struggle against apartheid and its transition to democracy. Reached by a climb through the manicured gardens, the site offers sweeping views over the capital and is freely accessible to visitors year-round.
