September to May; snow can close the pass in winter

Sani Pass is the classic Drakensberg adventure: a rough, switchbacking 4x4-only track that climbs steeply to the Lesotho border high on the escarpment. Guided day trips run from the KwaZulu-Natal side.

At the summit sits the Sani Mountain Lodge, long billed as one of the highest pubs in Africa — a fitting reward for the white-knuckle drive up.
