Langebaan Lagoon

Langebaan Lagoon lies about 120 km north of Cape Town, cradled by SANParks' West Coast National Park. The lagoon is the core of the Langebaan Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance declared in 1988, and its extensive intertidal flats and salt marshes support tens of thousands of migratory waders each summer. SANParks zones the lagoon for both conservation and recreation, with designated areas set aside for activities such as kayaking, kiteboarding and sailing so that watersports and the protected ecosystem can coexist.

The lagoon's shallow, warm and largely wind-sheltered water has made it one of South Africa's most celebrated flat-water venues for kitesurfing and windsurfing, offering everything from waist-deep beginner zones to fast, glassy blasting stretches. The wind is funnelled by the surrounding hills and is most reliable from roughly November to March, when the summer south-easter blows steadily. Combined with easy beach access and gentle, protected water, this makes Langebaan a genuinely family-friendly base for first-timers and seasoned riders alike.
